INTERFORST – the leading international trade fair for forestry and forest technology – will showcase which digital tools are already ready for practical application from October 15 to 18, 2026, in Munich.

Data is now imperative for decision-making in the forest

Active forest management in the context of climate change requires up-to-date and reliable forestry data as a basis for sound decisions, proactive planning, and sustainable adaptation. Forestry operations must identify damage caused by pests, storms, or forest fires early and react quickly. In addition to experience and forestry expertise, GIS applications, remote sensing, sensors, and AI provide essential foundations for stand analysis, risk assessment, and action planning.

Forest 4.0 connects forestry and timber value creation

Forest 4.0, however, encompasses far more than just the recording and management of forest stands. The digitalization processes cover the entire forestry value chain – from planning and maintenance to timber harvesting, log pile measurement, and logistics, all the way to invoicing, documentation, and verification of sustainability and timber origin. Their added value lies particularly in greater transparency, more efficient processes, and improved networking among the stakeholders involved.

Marcus Kühling, Group Leader for Forestry, Timber and Construction at the Agency for Renewable Resources (FNR), explains: “Digitalization makes complex changes in the forest more understandable and manageable. Crucially, data must be made available and applicable along the entire value chain – from logistics to processing. With the ‘Digitalization of Forestry & Timber’ roundtable, we offer a platform that enables close collaboration among the stakeholders.”

AI in the forest: From data management to decision-making

AI enables the efficient analysis of ever-increasing volumes of data from satellite and drone imagery, sensors, and forestry machinery. Key applications include the automatic identification of tree species and forest damage, monitoring of bark beetle infestations and drought stress, the creation of risk forecasts, and support for decisions regarding forest conversion and timber harvesting. AI does not replace forestry expertise but complements it through faster analysis.

“AI can help us better understand complex relationships in forest ecosystems and make informed decisions. Crucial to this is the responsible handling of data: data spaces, data trustees, and data hubs enable networking while simultaneously protecting data sovereignty,” explains Frank Heinze, Head of the Competence Center Forest and Wood 4.0 at the RIF Institute for Research and Transfer e. V.

Digital machine and fleet data create efficiency

Modern forestry machines now collect a wealth of operational, location, service, and performance data. This information enables predictive maintenance planning, reduces machine downtime, improves deployment planning, and ensures transparent timber supply. Digitalization has therefore long been an integral part of modern forestry technology – and this very connection between intelligent technology and digital data management will be showcased at INTERFORST.

Forest 4.0: Trends and Developments

Five developments are particularly shaping Forest 4.0: digital twins for planning and management, AI-supported early detection of damage, practical remote sensing through drones and sensors, networked machines and digital wood logistics, and digital proof of origin and sustainability.

Challenges of digitalization in the forest

Despite all its advantages, the digital transformation of the forestry sector is not a given and is hampered by various obstacles: lack of network coverage, inconsistent interfaces, insufficient data quality, costs, qualification requirements, and a lack of acceptance. INTERFORST offers a platform to assess these challenges, exchange experiences, and present practical solutions, as well as to further develop existing ones collaboratively.

Digital pioneers at INTERFORST 2026

At the leading trade fair for forestry and forestry technology, exhibitors are presenting a modern and broad spectrum of digital solutions. Husqvarna, for example, supports the digital management, monitoring, and maintenance of machine fleets with its Fleet Services. STIHL is showcasing its digital services and networked equipment management. Sennebogen is presenting digital machine monitoring and logistics processes, and Wahlers Forsttechnik is providing insights into digital machine and process solutions. New at INTERFORST are the DLG – SYSTEMS & COMPONENTS Forestry area and the Start-up Area.

SYSTEMS & COMPONENTS Forestry

Component and system manufacturers are working hand in hand with OEMs on digital solutions for modern forestry. Whether vehicle electronics, sensors, data management, or AI-based applications – many innovations for efficient and sustainable forest management originate in the supplier industry. At the special SYSTEMS & COMPONENTS Forestry by DLG area in Hall B6, visitors will gain insights into precisely these technological developments and meet the companies shaping the next generation of forestry technology.

Technical framework program with a focus on digitalization

Under the motto “Forestry Technology in Motion,” digital developments and innovative technologies in forestry will be the focus of several presentations on the congress stage on Friday, October 16, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Topics include digital forest management systems, forest inventory, AI applications, and quality assurance in roundwood sorting and measurement. The special exhibition in Hall B6, featuring live demonstrations on all of INTERFORST’s key themes, completes the supporting program in the area of digitalization.

Digitalisation in forestry, is the way forward.
