WMF 2026: where woodworking meets the next generation of manufacturing

The future of woodworking is becoming less about individual machines and more about how intelligently the entire factory works together. That shift will take centre stage at WMF 2026 – China International Furniture Machinery & Woodworking Machinery Fair, taking place from September 5–8 at the National Exhibition and Convention Center (NECC) in Shanghai.

Celebrating its 40th edition, WMF 2026 brings together more than 400 exhibitors across 52,000 sq m, with over 30,000 trade visitors expected. Under the theme “The Smart Balance of Manufacturing,” the exhibition places intelligent production, efficiency, flexibility and sustainable manufacturing firmly on the agenda.

But WMF is no longer simply a showcase of woodworking machinery. It is increasingly a window into how furniture manufacturing is evolving – from standalone equipment towards connected, automated and digitally enabled production systems.

From machines to smart factories

Across Halls 7.1 and 8.1, visitors will encounter technologies spanning the complete production chain, including primary wood processing, panel production, custom furniture manufacturing, solid-wood processing, curved-component machining, surface finishing and upholstery technology.

Among the show’s key focus areas are smart production lines and digital factories, where flexible and traceable systems demonstrate how manufacturers can integrate machines, data and automation to create more responsive production environments.

Advanced processing is another major theme, particularly as furniture design increasingly embraces curved forms, complex geometries and combinations of materials. WMF highlights technologies designed to translate these demanding design concepts into scalable industrial production.

Sustainability also moves beyond being a talking point. The exhibition will spotlight low-emission equipment, energy-efficient technologies, eco-friendly adhesives and alternative materials, including wood-plastic composites (WPC).

Connecting the furniture value chain

WMF 2026 will form part of “Furniture Tech Week”, running alongside CIFF Shanghai, Upholstery Tech Shanghai and CBD–IBCTF Shanghai. Together, the events connect furniture design, materials, manufacturing technology and building decoration – offering visitors a broader view of the industry’s rapidly converging value chain.

For international manufacturers, suppliers and buyers, this convergence is perhaps the most compelling aspect of WMF. The conversation is shifting from what can a machine do? to what can an integrated manufacturing system make possible?

As the woodworking industry navigates customised production, tighter margins, sustainability demands and increasingly sophisticated furniture design, WMF 2026 arrives at an important moment.

Forty years on, the fair is not simply looking back at how woodworking has changed. It is looking ahead – to a manufacturing landscape where intelligence, flexibility and craftsmanship increasingly share the same production floor.
