Sawmill Technology includes advanced machinery involvement, automation and advanced technical system and computer know how to maximize lumber performance, waste reduction, and manage product quality by ensuing apt material handling, log cutting and processing. Some of the latest innovations in log management includes, Lazer scanning system for identifying log health and precise log positioning, automated material flow systems, advanced circular as well as band saws, and technologies to make use of wood waste for secondary product manufacturing, such as particle board or energy.

Key activities in log management includes the following:

Log management and preparation;

  1. Log Decks & Conveyors- act of moving the logs into the mills efficiently.
  2. Debarkers- the process of removing the bark from logs before cutting.
  3. Log Scanning- an important step where laser and sensors are used to notice defects, identify log condition and measure log dimension to optimize cutting plans.

System of cutting logs

Log cutting system includes the use of various specialized tools such as;

  1. Circular Saws- large, rotating saw blades used for initial breakdown.
  2. Bandsaws- used generally for primary breakdown as well as resawing. Bandsaws uses regular loop blades for efficient cuts.
  3. Chainsaws- used for cutting logs
  4. Gangsaws- cuts boards from squared logs

Automation & Optimization:

  1. Computerized Controls: Run the entire sawmill operation with minimal manual input.
  2. Real-time Data Analysis: Optimizes log positioning, cutting patterns, and material flow.
  3. Robotics: Automate repetitive tasks, improving throughput and safety.

Lumber Finishing:

  1. Planing Machines: Smooth boards to specific thicknesses.
  2. Crosscut Saws: Cut lumber to final lengths.
  3. Kilns: Dry lumber to desired moisture content

Sawmill Technology at LIGNA 2025

  1. Automation & Digitalization

Sawmill process lines are improving in a remarkable way. The new lines are integrated with digital control, sensors, sorting as well as scanning technologies- ensuring proper precision, low waste and efficient resource usage.

Wood Mizer a top brand in sawmill technology segment introduced its new WM5500 industrial sawmill line, combined with the MR250 multirip saw focuses.

A new control system from SERRA, includes touch-screen interface, controlled via joystick, remote maintenance with LAN/WiFi, semi-automatic operation.

  • Resource Efficiency and Sustainability

Sawmill technology, an indispensable part of the wood industry, is also continuously developing to become more efficient and thus more sustainable, not least thanks to new processes for recycling former waste products.

SENNEBOGEN with two world premieres at LIGNA 2025

SENNEBOGEN introduced state-of-the-art technology for efficient timber handling at LIGNA 2025, including two brand new pick and carry material handlers for timber businesses and sawmills. SENNEBOGEN introduced the BIG TIMBER TRENDS at LIGNA in Hannover.

The 724 G and the 726 G was presented to the public for the first time at the trade fair. The two mobile pick and carry timber handling machines with operating weights of 29 t and 31 t respectively offer a tailor-made solution, particularly for efficient log handling in medium-sized timber businesses. For the first time, the two machines combine the proven pick and carry concept with the advantages of the latest, 6th machine generation, the SENNEBOGEN G series, and thus offer maximum efficiency as well as maximum user-friendliness and safety at the cutting edge of technology.

Other examples of new machines introduced or showcased:

SERRA SX 140 bandsaw: modular high-performance sawmill for logs up to 140 cm diameter, with optional frequency converter, robust construction.

SERRA CX control system as part of the above: 15.6″ TFT, joystick with 13 functions, maintenance/remote diagnosis, semi-automatic operation.

Primultini’s cutting system: 18° inclined band saw, variable-axis log carriages for smooth cutting, especially suitable for dry/hard logs.

MEBOR’s machines: HTZ 1300 PLUS (horizontal band saw), VTZ 1600 PLUS, VR 900 edger/multi-rip, etc.
